long, long ago, there lived an old woman who owned a black baby Elephant. The children in the village used to call her Granny and they named her elephant Blackie. Granny’s Blackie was a very friendly little elephant. He used to give joy rides to all the children and they shared their food with him. The old woman used to do stitching and tailoring work and Blackie used to happily spend time with children.
Many years passed in this manner. One day, Blackie wanted Granny to accompany him to the woods But Granny said, ‘My dear Blackie, I can’t walk that far. I am no longer as strong and fit as I used to be! Blackie realized that Granny was growing older and feeble. He thought to himself, “This old woman has looked after me for so many years. Now, it is my turn to take care of her and repay the debt. I must start working to earn money
So, Blackie set out to find some work. When he was walking along the river’s bank, he saw a man looking troubled. He had some heavily loaded bullock carts standing in the middle of the river. His bullocks were finding it difficult to lug them. When he saw Blackie, he asked him to help his bullocks in pulling the carts out of the river. He promised to pay two silver coins for each cart that Blackie pulled out of the water.
Blackie agreed to help. He went into the river and pulled out one cart after another, across to the bank of the river. After completing the task, he went to the man to take the money. But he saw that the dishonest man had given him only half the amount of money he had promised. Blackie was very angry with the dishonest man. He went and stood in the middle of the road to prevent his carts from moving further That man tried to get Blackie out of his way, but Blackie did not budge an inch.
The man soon understood what Blackie wanted. He went to Blackie and gave him the other half of the sum he had promised. He put the silver coins in the bag that Blackie was carrying around his neck. Blackie was very happy and he hurried home to give his first earnings to GrannyHe had been away from home for a long time and she was worried, about him. She asked him where he had been all this time. He narrated the whole story to her and gave her the bag of silver coins. Granny was very happy and she hugged him. She was so proud of her Blackie.
